StudentsNS welcomes new Nova Scotia Government

For immediate release

Halifax, Nova Scotia – Students Nova Scotia, the provincial advocacy group representing 37,000 Nova Scotia post-secondary students, welcomed Nova Scotia’s new provincial government today. The Liberal Party made multiple commitments to students en route to its election win this past Tuesday.

”We are looking forward to working with the new Nova Scotia government to address the challenges of students and youth in our province”, said StudentsNS Executive Director, Jonathan Williams. “For starters, the government committed to introduce graduate studies scholarships and eliminate interest on student loans, which were important election promises for students that we are looking forward to seeing implemented.”

During the election, besides promising graduate scholarships and no-interest student loans, the Liberal Party also committed to cease cutting university funding and consider reducing tuition. They also indicated they would maintain the Province’s approach to the minimum wage, which has been tied to the Low-Income Cut-Off.

“The challenges facing young Nova Scotians range from access, affordability and quality of post-secondary to addressing the youth employment crisis and mental health”, said StudentsNS Chair, Amy Brierley. “There is plenty of work to do, and it will be critical that the new government take action on these issues in partnership with students.”

As an organization with elected leadership, StudentsNS also recognized the importance of all the candidates’ participation in the election.

“We applaud all the candidates for their dedication in running for public life,” said StudentsNS Chair, Amy Brierley. “We also thank the members of the out-going government for their service and cooperation in the past four years.”
