Students Nova Scotia Launches Annual Provincial Student Advocacy Week
Halifax, NS - Today, student leaders from across the province arrived in Halifax to kick off Students Nova Scotia’s annual Advocacy Week. The week began with the release of the report titled “Students for Nova Scotia: A Postsecondary Pathway to Innovation,” which features research-based recommendations aimed at working collaboratively across the province to improve the accessibility, affordability, and quality of postsecondary education in Nova Scotia. Over the next five days, students will meet with MLAs and stakeholders within the postsecondary sector to advocate for collective action on key student priorities.
“Our purpose is to amplify student voices for a more prosperous Nova Scotia through practical recommendations and collaborative efforts,” says Matt Doyle, Chair of Students Nova Scotia. “By working together with government, stakeholders and institutions, we can strengthen the postsecondary sector by making higher-education available to more people, which is the ultimate goal of our Advocacy Week.”
This year’s student recommendations include improving financial aid, easing healthcare access for international students, tackling the housing crisis, promoting affordable educational resources, and providing fair funding for graduate research.
“Investing in the future of Nova Scotia means breaking down the financial barriers our students face, both domestic and international,” says Sadie McAlear, Vice Chair of Students Nova Scotia. “Our advocacy work is centered around enhancing financial aid accessibility and accelerating health care coverage, to support students throughout their degrees. These measures not only create a more affordable and inclusive education system, but also ensure that Nova Scotia remains competitive in attracting and retaining talent, continuing to promote the economy, culture and population growth of the province.”
Student Advocacy Week serves as a cornerstone of Students Nova Scotia's continuous efforts to ensure student priorities and perspectives are heard by government and decision-makers across the province. We believe that engaging with the government and key stakeholders is the most impactful way to address student concerns and collaboratively enhance the higher education landscape in our province.
