Studens Nova Scotia releases 2016-2019 Strategic plan

The five strategic directions StudentsNS will take with this Strategic Plan are: 

1. Improving access and affordability to post-secondary education in Nova Scotia.
2. Ensuring more post-secondary graduates can stay in Nova Scotia to work.
3. Increasing student participation in civic engagement.
4. Building strategic and multi-sectorial partnerships.
5. Continuing to strengthen StudentsNS membership.

Signing of MOU between Province and Universities a step in the right direction

Halifax, N.S. – Yesterday, StudentsNS was pleased to see the signing of a memorandum of understanding between government and universities that is a positive step towards more transparency, student support, and consultation expectations for institutions in the Province. The Department of Labour and Advanced Education and the Council of Nova Scotia University Presidents signed the MOU to govern a four-year partnership in the sector.


StudentsNS is pleased to welcome Sophie Helpard as its new Executive Director

Halifax, N.S. – StudentsNS is pleased to welcome Sophie Helpard as its 9th Executive Director. Sophie comes to StudentsNS after serving as President of the University Students’ Council where she represented the 30,000 undergraduate students at Western University in London, Ontario. At Western, she studied Political Science at Huron University College, an affiliated liberal arts college on campus.


Students Nova Scotia defends housing needs for International Students

Students who spoke to CBC News about the house on Payzant Street never made a formal complaint about their concerns. Research by Students Nova Scotia found that’s not unusual among international students.

“We looked specifically at international students as a population that may not have the local social support network in place to search for appropriate housing, or even know the city well enough to know what a good place to live in the city would be,” said Nick Head-Petersen, the executive director of Students Nova Scotia.

StFX grad new executive director with StudentsNS

Former StFX student union president Nick Head-Petersen has been named StudentsNS eighth executive director.
The announcement came in an Aug. 5 press release from the organization. It was also noted Head-Petersen served on StudentsNS board of directors during his time as StFX student union president.
“It is really a homecoming for me,” Head-Petersen said in the release.
“StudentsNS is the group representing the interests of students throughout the province and I look forward to my new role with the organization.”

N.S. student groups call on province to forgive student loans
