University students in Nova Scotia will see a slight increase to their student loan cheques this fall. The provincial budget announced a boost of $4.6 million for student assistance in the coming year. Beginning in August, weekly assistance cheques will go from $170 to $180, with 60 per cent of that money being a loan and 40 per cent a grant. Jonathan Williams, the executive director of Students NS, said the budget contains largely good news for post-secondary students. More
The executive director of Students Nova Scotia said the “experience trap” is driving too many young people out of province, and said the municipality is taking a step in the right direction. “If you look at the demographics for our province…one of the projections I’ve seen is a 14 per cent drop in the traditional labour force by 2026,” said Jonathan Williams. “So these investments in helping young people get into the work force here in Nova Scotia are really smart policy.” More
