Members of Students Nova Scotia have wrapped up another successful Annual Planning Retreat (APR), welcoming a new board and officers, and setting the group’s priorities for the 2014-15 year. The APR is among the organization’s most important annual meetings, where members hold their Annual General Meeting and establish the direction for the organization’s energy, resources and priorities in the coming year.

“The energy at this year’s AGM and Planning retreat was electric,” said James Patriquin, StudentsNS’s newly elected President. “I think we’re all excited to have the opportunity to work together with such an engaged group of representatives, to address concerns that we know matter to students.”

Among the decisions made at the APR, members elected new board officers under revised board titles:

President:                                                         James Patriquin (SMUSA Executive VP)

Vice President University Affairs:      Alicia Silliker (StFXSU Executive Vice President)

Vice President College Affairs:            Scott Byrne (NSCCSA Kingstec)

Vice President Administration:           Sarah Hines (CBUSU VP Finance and Operations)

StudentsNS members also identified priorities and activities that will strive towards four broad goals: improving PSE in Nova Scotia; supporting student wellness; strengthening student leadership; and promoting youth economic success. A ratified, concrete list of strategies and tactics that will be used to achieve these goals will be made available in the coming weeks.

“StudentsNS members are going to do everything possible to make sure that students are listened to and provided with the tools they need to push for change, be it on youth attraction to Nova Scotia, a more transparent university system, or the urgent need to provide international students with public health care,” Said Patriquin. “We’ve got lots of work to do, and this group of student representatives is ready to go.”
